First Draft of Poster for 'Vanity'

We plan to use this picture for our poster for 'Vanity', this is because we have the reflection of the main character, Zac, in the window with his hand out which we can see. We liked this picture as we felt like it showed Zac's love for himself but also the distance and the fact he cannot actually "reach" the person he loves. We thought that this would be a good picture for our poster because it shows this relationship well.

To add to this, we would obviously have the title of the film 'Vanity' across the top of the picture and the actors names above this in a smaller font. This would tell the audience what the film was and probably give them a much better idea on what the film is actually about.

However, upon thinking and discussing it more, we don't think that we'd be able to use this picture to a completely good way due to the fact that it's hard to actually see the actors face in the reflection and considering most audience members won't look at the poster very intensely, they might not be able to see his face at all.

Tagline Ideas for 'Vanity'

  • 'Reflecting on my reflection'
  • 'Reflecting on your reflection'
  • 'Mirror, mirror on the wall…'
  • 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder'
  • 'Beauty vs The Beast'
  • 'Looks can be deceiving'
  • 'Dig Deeper, This Winter'
  • 'Take a closer look at yourself'
  • 'Have you ever seen yourself? I mean really seen yourself?'
Within our group, we have come up with a range of tag lines that we will consider and build on to use on our film poster for 'Vanity'. All these tag lines fit in with our theme/genre of the film e.g. vanity/romance, and they suggest a bit about what the film involves and gives a flavour of the film for our target audiences. We also think that our tag lines that we have come up with all come in relation to targeting different age ranges within our target audience.

Soundtrack for Vanity

This is our fellow student, Grace McNabb, singing 'Man in the Mirror' by Michael Jackson for our trailer, Vanity. We thought this song was appropriate for our film because of the lyrics and simply the title of the track. 'Man in the Mirror' sums up our film plot quite nicely we feel like and we thought this would fit in well with our trailer and how we want it to look.

How to Make a Film Trailer

Audience feedback on storyboard

This is the feedback we received from our animatic storyboard. From this, we now know that the shots of Zac and Florence at the beginning of the trailer is clearly different to the one at the end, to show the distance that has grown between the couple through Zac's love for his reflection. Through this, we also know that we need to not include as much of the films plot as Harry believed it gave too much away and therefore you wouldn't need to see the film to understand it.

Make Up Test for Florence

This is the makeup that I will plan to wear when filming as Florence. I decided to go for a natural, but warm look as to us, Florence is a kind and warm person so we think the makeup should match these features. To create this look, I used a pale pink and bronze across the lid with dark brown for some definition in the crease, which creates the warm toned makeup we wanted for the character. I went for a pink lipstick as well to tie the look together as we wanted Florence to appear on screen as quite cute and naive as she doesn't understand what Zac is going through, and we think that the pop of pink would connote this.

Lighting Test & Filter Tests

We have decided that we will need to do more lighting tests to get some shots that will benefit us with our genre in mind, our footage will be filmed in daylight so we will need to get lighting shots of this.

Storyboard of 'Vanity'

The first shot shown in the trailer is a long establishing shot showing Zac and Florence seated in a café talking. We decided to use this shot to establish the area and atmosphere that they're in, as well as to show their relationship towards each other.

Extreme close up of the key that Zac sets down onto the table in front of him and Florence. This is to make it clear that he wants to move in with her because he's giving her a key to his apartment.

Close up of Zac's face to show how his emotions towards Florence and that he's happy to move in with her and that he's happy in general.

We then have a close up of Florence's face in order to show her emotions to what Zac has just asked her as well and that she's happy.

Next there's a mid shot to show the two characters body language and emotions towards each other and how Florence is accepting the key from Zac

Close up of Zac's face again to show how he feels about Florence accepting the key

There's then an over the shoulder shot showing Zac washing his hands at the bathroom sink, which will then cut to a close up of his hands in the sink. After this, there will be a close up of Zac's face where he'll look up. It will then go back to an over the shoulder shot to him looking up at the small mirror in front him.

There's a closer over the shoulder shot where we just see the back of the characters head and the mirror in front of him. We can see Zac looking at himself in the mirror.

The next couple of shots are supposed to act as sort of a montage of Zac falling in love with himself, or just simply starting to notice himself and his face more. In this first shot of the montage there's a mid shot from behind Zac were he's working on the computer.

Over the shoulder shot. When Zac turns his computer screen off, we see his reflection in the screen and Zac is looking at it with awe.

Next there's a mid shot directly in front of Zac of him on the phone with Florence, he looks quite happy as he's laughing.

Over the shoulder shot showing Zac's phone screen that he was on the phone to Florence, we can see Zac's reflection in the phone.

Tracking mid shot behind Zac walking down the hall towards the kitchen. There's a mirror in the hall that he passes and sees himself in.

Over the shoulder shot of Zac looking at himself in the mirror

Mid shot of Zac and Florence sitting at the dining room table, talking. The idea of this shot was to contrast with the first shot of the trailer, in order to show the distance that has now been created due to the relationship that Zac has formed with himself

Close up of the size of Florence's face, in order to show her body language and her emotions towards Zac as she's talking to him

There's then a low angle shot looking up at Zac where we can see him looking at the knife in front of him, he looks happy while doing this

There's then another front on close up of Florence who's calling Zac's name - he isn't replying to her as he's too infatuated with his reflection. This is again to show her emotions

Over the shoulder shot showing Zac looking at the reflection in the knife

Close up of Zac's face finally realising that Florence is talking to him and she's trying to get his attention - he looks confused

We then see Zac breaking down and there's a long shot of him in the corner of a dark room crying.

Audition Tapes for 'Vanity'

We did these auditions after we decided what kind of character types we wanted for our film. Frankie and George Coates got the roles of Florence and Zac, we felt like they fit the characters well as they gave good reasons for our questions at the end of their auditions.

Concept Development: Character Outline

Character Outline

Florence Anderson;

Florence is a sweet, outgoing and responsible young woman who is supportive and in love with her husband. With the couple being newly weds they have hardly had any bumps in the road so the hardship that she has to go through with Zak is the hardest one yet. She isn't one to give up but because she is young she's also very vulnerable and almost reaches her breaking point when her husband can't seem to get over the obsession he has with his reflection. In terms of propps character type Florence is a modern day "hero", there isn't a clear cut villain but her husbands reflection can be classed as that.
She needs to rescue her husband from himself
and she's the only one that can do this.

Zac Jones;

Is a humble and honest family man who is loved by all. He's never been superficial or materialistic in anyway so the he's caught off guard by these new feelings he's experiencing. Zac is also very independent and doesn't take help from others as graciously as others, despite the kind of help it is. This a down fall in his personality when he refuses to accept help from outsiders and his own family. In terms of props character types Zac is a modern 'damsel in distress"who needs rescuing from himself.

Concept Development - Production Logo Research and Ideas

These production company logos are ones that have been used in other romance films that we have already researched. Because we want to make sure our own production logo is one that looks realistic and as professional as possible, as well as making sure it's one that will be used for our genre of film, I decided to research these company logos to get some ideas.

By researching these production company logos, I discovered that the company name is included on the logo as well as normally some kind of picture, most often something that is related to the company name. For example this can be seen in the logo for Focus Features where the image is out of focus as well as the 'o' in the name.

Below is the production logo that I made and designed for our trailer.

Target Audeince Conclusion

Iconic Imagery of 'Vanity'

Rough Narrative Thread of 'Vanity'

Zac and Florence are having a romantic meal out, enjoying their time after moving in with each other.
The trailer fades to black with a female voiceover saying: "I know that we're not supposed to say this, but you're very handsome."
Zac is washing in the bathroom, and then looks up to the mirror, staring at his reflection with the comment in mind. Voice over with "you're very handsome" over again.
(Man in the Mirror starts playing slowly)
Montage of relationship developing with shots of Zac looking in any reflection available.
"We need to find a way of telling her."
Zac and Florence sit at the dinner table "how was work?" Zac doesn't hear as he is staring at himself in the knife/spoon.
(Man in the Mirror finishes - "CHANGE")
"Take these, you'll feel better soon."
Smashes mirrors in anger because he can't communicate with his reflection anymore and doesn't understand what is happening.
He becomes withdrawn.

Target Audience Interviews

As part of our target audience research we have interviewed members of our primary and secondary target audience in order to find out more about the particular things they would like to see in a romantic film and whether they would prefer to see the typical romantic film or a subverted version of a romantic film would be in preference. This research has enabled us to come to some final decisions in terms of the plot of our film and making sure it appeals to our intended target audience.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Narrative of Film/Trailer

Film narrative

  1. Equilibrium - It's Valentines Day -- Joel seems unhappy and so takes a spontaneous day off work and goes to Montauk. He finds himself falling for every girl that shows him the slightest bit of affection. He meets a girl called Clementine in Montauk, they get along and we're shown that they spend the next two days together. We then see a sequence of Joel crying (it's apparent that this is sometime after he meets Clementine), he gets home and we find out it's a day before Valentines Day, he takes a tablet and goes straight to bed. People with equipment then go into his apartment.
  2. Disruption - It then flashes back to three days before Valentines Day and Joel is saying that he wants his and Clementine's situation resolved.  Joel is at the library, he sees Clementine working and tries to speak to her -- only, she acts like she doesn't know who he is and talks to another guy whom she seems to be in a relationship with.
  3. Realisation - Joel goes to his friends to talk about how she acted like she didn't know him, he's upset, confused and angry with her. His friends show him a card they had received, from 'LACUNA INC.', which says that Clementine had undergone a medical procedure to erase all memories of Joel and to never mention their relationship to her ever again.
  4. Attempt to repair - After discovering what Clementine had done, Joel finds 'LACUNA INC.' and ends up deciding to have the same procedure done to erase all memories of Clementine. We then go back to see the actual procedure happening in Joel's sleep. The film then goes back and forth between what is happening in his room where the procedure is taking place and being inside Joel's head looking at his memories. By the end of Joel's procedure, Mary, who works at 'LACUNA INC.', ends up sending CDs of recordings out to everyone who had had their memories erased -- these recordings were taken when they were talking about the person they wanted to erase from their memories.
  5. New equilibrium - Joel's memories are erased, as he wakes up, we see the same sequence we saw at the very start of the film. We're shown that Joel and Clementine meet once again and it jumps to the second day that they were together. After stopping at Clementine's apartment, she has received a letter from Mary and her tape is inside. Her and Joel listen to it in the car and she says she's erasing Joel. Joel goes home alone and discovers he also has had a tape sent to him. Clementine finds where Joel lives and goes to his apartment and someone who lives in his building recognises her. They listen to his tape together and don't understand why Joel would say some of the things that he said. She goes to leave but Joel tells her to wait -- they agree that Joel may end up finding something that he doesn't like about her and that Clementine may end up getting bored and feeling trapped, but they want to try anyway. It ends with Joel and Clementine, seemingly, back together and happy.
Trailer narrative
  1. Equilibrium - Joel and Clementine meet and they seem very happy together
  2. Disruption - Their relationship begins to break down and we can see that they're unhappy together, Clementine comes home late and they just don't seem to get on
  3. Realisation - We see very little evidence that shows Joel finding out that Clementine erased Joel from her memory
  4. Attempt to repair - Joel decides to erase Clementine from his memory
  5. New equilibrium - NOT SHOWN

The Vow - narrative structure

The Vow synopsis into Todorov's narrative stages

  1. Equilibrium: Leo and Paige are happily married and come out of a cinema to find it snowing and get in their car to go home.
  2. Disruption: Whilst in the car, Paige leans over to Leo and kisses him. At this moment, a lorry plows into the back of their car and Paige crashes through the windscreen of their car.
  3. Realisation: Leo wakes up and finds Paige in a coma. Paige then wakes up thinking Leo is her doctor and not remembering him or the last couple of years at all.
  4. Attempt to repair: Paige returns to her family home after Leo tries to make her fall back in love with him, remembering her life before but not knowing why she left in the first place - her best friend had an affair with her father. She goes on a night out with all her friends from her past and sees Jeremy (her ex-fiance) who she is still in love with as she doesn't remember Leo. She returns to Law school and divorces Leo. Paige then sees her estranged friend who doesn't know about her memory loss and apologises for having the affair.
  5. New equilibrium: Paige and Leo bump into each other at a closed cafe due to snow and therefore rekindle their relationship.
The Vow trailer

  1. Equilibrium: Shows a montage of Leo and Paige getting married, leading up to their marriage and life after.
  2. Disruption: Slow motion of the lorry colliding with the car that Leo and Paige are in.
  3. Realisation: Paige is in hospital and is confused, calls Leo "doctor" - suggests she doesn't know who he is. Montage of Leo becoming angry at the fact Paige doesn't remember him in the hospital.
  4. Attempt to repair: Partly shown through the use of sound - voice over of Leo "I will make her fall back in love with me."
  5. New equilibrium: Not shown as this would give the plot away in the two minute trailer, defeating the point of enticing the audience in as they wouldn't feel the need to watch the film when it comes out as they know the ending already.

About Time - Narrative

The narrative structure:

Tsvetan Todorov:

  • A theorist who believed that stories start in a state of equilibrium, which is then disrupted, setting in motion a change of events. The resolution of the story is the creation of a new or different equilibrium. He summed it up in 5 stages:
  1. Equilibrium.
  2. Disruption of equilibrium by a person or event.
  3. Realisation that disruption has occurred.
  4. Attempt to repair the damage of the disruption.
  5. Restoration of equilibrium (usually a new equilibrium).

The narrative structure 'Vanity':

  1. Zac and Florence are happy newlyweds in a society in the near future where vanity and appearance are not the be all and end all.
  2. Someone tells Zac that he is very handsome which is forbidden as people are not supposed to take appearance into account.
  3. Zac notices himself in a different way for the first time after being told this, he starts to become obsessed and infatuated with his own reflection (himself).
  4. Florence takes Zac to the doctors because she realises something is wrong, the doctor cures him.
  5. Zac is unhappy as his one true love has been taken away from him, Florence is happy because she has her husband back.

Comparing trailer narratives to their feature length film:

About Time:

Film plot:

  1. The man has a good family and a happy life but he always struggles to find love / can't say the right thing etc.
  2. His father tells him that the men in the family can travel in time, he doesn't believe him and has to find out for himself.
  3. Once he realises it is real, he discovers that he can re-do things to his advantage and change the future so he can fall in love with the perfect girl.
  4. He goes back in time to prevent his sister from being in a car crash but when he returns to the present he discovers that his daughter is now his son, therefore he has to go back again and ket it happen.
  5. He has his own happy family (a wife and three children) and his sister has also found happiness and is starting a family of her own.
Trailer narrative:
  1. Shown how he struggles with girls.
  2. Shown the discussion between him and his father when he is told he can travel in time.
  3. Shown his going back and kissing a girl, he realises he can change things.
  4. Not shown.
  5. Not shown.

Narrative of Film Trailer

Tsvetan Todorov

Tdorov was a theorist who believed that stories start in a state of equilibrium, which is then disrupted, setting in motion of chain of events. The resolution of the story is the creation of a new/different equilibrium. He summed up the journey in five stages:

  1. Equilibrium
  2. Disruption of equilibrium by a person or event
  3. Realisation disruption has occurred
  4. Attempt to repair damage or disruption
  5. Restoration of equilibrium (new equilibrium)

Narrative structure of Vanity:

  1. Zac and Flo are happy newly weds in a society where vanity isn't a main focus, people are more concerned with personality.
  2. Someone mentions to him that he is handsome, but this is something that is forbidden to say- they tell hi not to worry about it, but plants it in his head. Zac is in the bathroom and finds himself thinking about the comment when he realises his reflection for the first time -- looking at yourself for a prolonged period of time is frowned upon
  3. Zac soon becomes obsessed and infatuated with himself. His marriage starts to slowly fall apart due to his obsession with his 'new lover'.
  4.

Comparing trailer narratives to their feature length:
The trailer doesn't feature an attempt to resolution or attempt to restoration. Not giving away the ending of the film. There is only the equilibrium, disruption of equilibrium by a person or event & the realisation disruption has occurred

Pitches For Film Trailers

These are a few ideas that me and my group have come up with for our film trailer. We've made sure our genre is clear in each pitch, however our pitches don't follow the typical conventions of a romantic film. In order to find out whether our target audience would enjoy a slightly unconventional romantic film we've come up with a questionnaire that will make apparent to us what our audience would prefer to see. Having target audience feedback will also help our group come to a decision on which film we'd like to create a trailer for. By having audience feedback as we move along with our planning and research while ensure that our final product meets the needs of our target audience

Group Formation

My group members:

  • Francesca Bjorkegren
  • Phoebe Frances
  • George Coates

Individually we all have different films we can bring to the group, personally I'm good at picking appropriate sound and acting in front of the camera & planning.

Francesca is a good director and has creative and original ideas when filming and planning.
George is also good at directing, editing and planning.
Phoebe is a great actress and bringing ideas to the table along with costume/makeup

Our chosen genre is romance, here are some films that are similar to ours:
